Islands and isolated coastal communities need power that runs every hour of every day, often with salt air, high temperatures and long supply lines for fuel and spare parts. A hybrid system combining solar PV, battery storage and generator sets delivers that continuity while cutting fuel use. MPMC designs and manufactures all three layers, together with the EMS and SCADA that coordinate them, giving island utilities, resorts, industrial zones and communities one partner for the complete system.
Three Layers of an Island Hybrid System
Solar Generation
Solar PV supplies the bulk of daytime energy. MPMC's SPK Series mobile solar arrays, from 7.65 kWp to 231.84 kWp, deploy quickly with HJT or bifacial panels, while larger plants connect fixed PV arrays through DC-coupled storage such as the HBD-DC 410 and HBD-DC 5000.
Mobile arrays are particularly useful on islands where land is at a premium or allocated for a fixed period, because they can be repositioned as projects evolve and shipped in compact form.
Battery Storage as the Grid-Former
The HBD-A Series, from 125 kW to 1,125 kW and 261 kWh to 2,170 kWh per unit, forms and stabilises the island grid. It operates in VSG, grid-forming, PQ and VF modes, provides black start, stores surplus solar for the evening and absorbs load fluctuations, using LFP 314Ah cells rated for 8,000 cycles at 90% depth of discharge with liquid cooling and IP67 battery packs.
Generator Sets for Firm Capacity
Containerised diesel, gas or biofuel generator sets provide firm capacity at night and through cloudy periods. Single-engine units cover 800 kVA to 3,750 kVA, with copper radiators for 50°C ambient, ISO 12944 C4 or C5 enclosures for coastal and tropical sites, and parallel load sharing through DSE or DEIF AGC controllers for N+X redundancy. For island industrial zones, the MCLS2000H(S)-1 delivers 2,000 kVA prime at 11 kV for long distribution runs.

Intelligent Control for Minimal Diesel Run-Time
MPMC's self-developed EMS uses multi-source data and weather forecasting to maximise PV generation, schedule battery charging and dispatch generator sets as demand requires. The SCADA platform provides real-time remote monitoring and control, ten years of data retention, an SL3-level cybersecurity framework and Starlink satellite backup communication, so island systems can be supervised remotely by a small local team.
This coordination brings practical benefits to island operators. Generator sets run at efficient load points when they are needed, the battery covers sudden load changes and motor starts, and surplus solar is stored for the evening, so fuel deliveries become less frequent and engines accumulate fewer running hours. Hybrid power stations from MPMC are delivered with containerised designs suited to sea transport and rapid on-site deployment.

The Kenya microgrid shows what the architecture achieves: stable round-the-clock power in a high-UV, sandy environment, zero corrosion, seamless switching between solar and diesel, and minimal on-site manpower, with diesel run-time kept low through weather-driven dispatch. For islands committed to renewable fuels, MPMC's Indonesian biodiesel plants show how the generator layer itself can move to low-carbon fuel.
Behind each project is MPMC's end-to-end scope of design consultation, product customisation, CNAS-accredited factory testing, logistics and commissioning, with generator servicing supported through the global networks of Cummins, Perkins, MTU, Baudouin, Scania, Stamford and Leroy-Somer.
